Bed Bug Prevention

No one likes having to deal with the physical and mental strain of a bed bug infestation.

The best way to avoid the side effects is to avoid an infestation all together.

Bed bugs are crafty insects. There is no way to proof your home against them; however, you can take precautions to limit their opportunities to get a foothold and spread.

The most important thing to know when trying to avoid bed bugs is how the bugs get into homes in the first place.

Bed bugs most commonly spread from home to home by hitching a ride on luggage, fabric bags, clothing or other items you carry with you when travelling, be it on vacation or on your way to work. Bed bugs can also spread through moving boxes and, very occasionally through wild birds or pets.

If you are abroad, change rooms or hotels as soon as possible if you see signs of bed bugs. Check under the sheets, along mattress seams and the edges of box springs , as well as behind the headboard. Do not put your luggage on the bed, and try to keep it off the floor.

Upon returning home, separate you laundry into plastic bags and wash and dry all clothing on the highest setting, or take the items to the dry cleaner. It is also prudent to vacuum and hand wash luggage and other items that won’t fit into laundry with hot, soapy water. Use a brush to scrub items along the seams.

Bed bugs can also be spread by taking in old or used furniture. Before bringing any second-hand furniture into your home, inspect the items carefully for signs of bed bugs and, if possible, wash and dry all items with hot, soapy water.

It’s impossible to completely avoid bed bugs, but taking these precautions can help to limit your opportunities for exposure.
