Nobody wants to wake up to find that something has bitten them while they slept, but how do you know you have bed bugs?
If you go to bed without bites, and wake up with them, there’s a good chance you have bed bugs, but the only way to confirm an infestation is to see the bugs themselves.
Examining the areas behind the head board, under the sheets, along mattress piping and underneath the box spring is a good start. Remember, bed bugs are light sensitive and prefer dark places. Searching with a flashlight may help to flush them out of their hiding places.
The best time to see bed bugs is while they are hunting, which usually occurs about an hour before the sun rises.
But bed bugs also leave some unique clues behind.
They often leave behind blood stains that look like small red pin pricks in the areas they have been feeding.
Their bites also leave behind marks on the skin.
A bedbug bite is characterized by a red swelling with a dark red centre on the skin, similar to mosquito bites. The bites are itchy and tend to be found in a uniform pattern or grouping on the body, often in a straight line or zig zag pattern. Bites can be found anywhere on the body, but are more commonly found on places where skin makes direct contact with a surface, such as the face, arms, hands, legs and feet.
People don’t feel bed bug bites, and they can take days to begin causing symptoms like itching or a burning sensation on the skin.
If you look for bed bugs but can’t find them, it doesn’t mean they aren’t there. While they can be seen with the naked eye, the insects are notoriously difficult to detect, especially in the early stages of infestation.
If you suspect you have bed bugs,The best way to confirm your suspicion is to have a professional do a proper inspection.
